The Seafarers Journal informs that firefighters have extinguished a blaze aboard the Russian fishing vessel Sveaborg at the port of Las Palmas in the Canary Islands. Three members of the crew died in the fire, and their bodies were found late Thursday. The fire reportedly broke out in the engine room on Thursday afternoon while SVEABORG was docked in the port of Las Palmas on Gran Canaria. The vessel was undergoing maintenance in the port.
The Las Palmas de Gran Canaria fire department dispatched five fire trucks to the scene. The crew was evacuated. During the extinguishing, the bodies of three dead sailors were found and all of them are citizens of Ukraine. Four more victims were hospitalized with combustion products poisoning. The surviving sailors will not be able to return on board until the investigation is complete, the port authorities told local media.
