Leaders partnership: modern terminal for the blue rebar transshipment

The result of the partnership between two large Ukrainian companies, the leaders of their industries – the port operator Transinvestservice (TIS) and the metallurgical company ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih was a unique project for the domestic port industry to build a reloading complex for the blue rebar in the TIS production area in Yuzhny seaport.

The total amount of investments that TIS undertook amounted $ 4.5 million. In this case, the object was built in just five months (a very short time for this kind of work). ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih, in turn, undertook providing the terminal with the necessary cargo flow of its own production.

— We export more than 85% of the products we produce in Ukraine. Its consumers are about 50 countries – in the Middle East, the Persian Gulf and in Europe. The implementation of this project will allow us to further improve, because when we talk about quality, we mean not only production, but also logistics. This modern technological warehouse will allow us to maintain the reinforcement with the preservation of the required quality. Therefore, today’s event is a step forward for both our company and Ukraine as a whole, since ArcelorMittal is the world’s steel producer, said Anastasia Tatarulieva, deputy general director of marketing and sales at ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih.

The transshipment capacity of the complex is 550,000 tons a year. According to A.Tatarulieva, the metallurgical company intends to fully load this terminal. “The production capacity of our enterprise is 7 million tons of steel per year, and the demand for blue rebar in the world is only growing”, she added.

Earlier this cargo from ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih transshipped in Mykolaiv at the capacities of the NickMet Terminal operator and the specialized port Oktyabrsk (now Olvia). With the introduction of the complex in Yuzhny export cargo turnover of the blue rebar will grow, according to the press service of Arcelor, by 200%.

PJSC ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih is part of the structure of ArcelorMittal, the No. 1 steel producer in the world. This is an enterprise with a full metallurgical cycle, which includes coke and chemical, mining and metallurgical production (which includes the agglomeration, steelmaking and rolling departments).

Transinvestservice is the largest port operator in Ukraine. A fifth of all ships arriving in the country are handled at its berths. According to the results of the first half of the year, TIS cargo turnover exceeded 13.5 million tons. Stevedore operates five terminals (TIS-Coal, TIS-Ore, TIS-Grain, TIS-Mineral Fertilizers, TIS-Container Terminal) and its own railway infrastructure.

The peculiarity of this project is the fact that the blue rebar is an unusual cargo, very sensitive to external conditions during transportation. The head of the TIS Container terminal, the TIS Group co-founder Yegor Grebennikov noted that this cargo cannot contact with moisture and precipitation throughout the delivery chain. Therefore, the warehouse is completely waterproof. Inside it are laid automobile and railway tracks for the production of cargo operations inside the warehouse. Loading and unloading is provided by four bridge cranes. The warehouse area is 7,000 square meters, it can accommodate up to 40,000 tons of the rebar. The berth, where the products will be loaded on ships, is located three hundred meters from the warehouse.

As the head of the Odessa Customs Alexander Vlasov said, today this warehouse is the only one in Ukraine, built in accordance with the most modern requirements of the customs infrastructure, which will significantly speed up the clearance of goods in both export and import modes.

A special guest at the opening ceremony of the terminal was the head of the Odessa Regional State Administration Maxim Stepanov. He stressed that today thanks to this facility hundreds of new jobs were created, and in addition, its commissioning means the creation of thousands of jobs in related industries. Besides, in the future the reloading complex can be used for transshipment of imported containerized cargoes.

— Thanks to the technological features of this facility, the processing time will bre reduced from four days to 20 hours. And these containers will go further by rail, and not by roads, which are not in the best condition, the head of the region said.

Maxim Stepanov is convinced that all this gives an impetus to the development of the economy of both the Odessa region and Ukraine as a whole.
