New technologies: Port of Rotterdam Authority launches smart bollard trial

New technologies continue to be introduced into the shipping and shipbuilding industries. The Port Authority of Rotterdam launches a test model of a smart mooring bollard along the waterfront of Hutchison Ports ECT Delta on Maasvlakt. This was reported by the press service on the official website. It was developed in collaboration with Straatman BV, Zwijndrecht. By measuring the strain on the mooring lines in real time, the bollard not only allows the real-time monitoring of safety, but it also provides a clearer picture of which vessels can moor at which quays. The trial is in line with the Port of Rotterdam Authority’s policy of making the port more efficient through digitisation.

“Until now, it was not possible to measure the load on the mooring lines. The lack of accurate data meant that we had to accept maximum loads as the norm. These forces vary according to local conditions. A smart mooring bollard will help us get accurate data, ”the message says. When force is applied to the device, it moves weakly. The sensor measures the force and sends the results directly to the Port of Rotterdam Authority.
