The Spanish Ministry of Transport said the Liberian-flagged ship Aldan is being held in the port of Almeria following a fuel spill that spread over an area of 55 km².
«The ship will be detained until its managers pay a fixed deposit,» the ministry said.
Aldan is likely owned by Muhit Maritime FZE, which is headquartered in Jebel Ali Free Zone, UAE, according to IMO filings. What was on the tanker is unclear. Last month, the vessel carried 150,000 barrels of gasoline on behalf of the Swiss company ES Euro Shipping. But several sources said that he entered the waters of Venezuela instead. If Aldan enters a Venezuelan port, chances are that it could be carrying heavy oil or fuel oil from that country.
