Maersk shipping company had to pay a EUR 20,000 (USD 22,341) security deposit after locals spotted one of its ships emitting excess smoke while approaching the port of Algeciras, Spain, on July 18.
The port authority and classification society inspected the 6,648 TEU vessel while it was alongside.
Maersk Sembawang’s crew was able to correct the defect and the Singapore-flagged boxship was cleared to sail after the inspection.
We will be fully cooperating with the relevant authorities during the further investigation,” the Maersk spokesperson added.
Available AIS data indicates that the 2007-built ship called at Valencia after departing Algeciras and is currently moored at Marseille Fos Port.
