Ukrainian industrial company Interpipe is considering the possibility of leasing a second vessel for sea transportation on the Odesa-Persian Gulf route. As the company’s director of procurement and logistics, Oleksiy Yanovsky, reported in a column for MMC Center, the formation of a stable cargo flow and the selection of candidate vessels for long-term lease are currently underway.
According to the top manager, the first experience of using time charter was successful: the company was able to optimize logistics costs and increase the manageability of supplies. Initially, the leased vessel worked as a feeder on the Odesa-Varna route, and later made flights to Batumi, which allowed testing the flexibility of using the vessel within the Black Sea.
Yanovsky emphasized that the use of time charter allowed reducing transportation costs on the Odesa-Varna route by almost 30%, as well as reducing the burden on operational personnel.
Despite the successful case, the company does not plan to create its own cargo fleet in the near future. As Yanovsky noted, despite the economic feasibility in some cases, such a step requires significant investments and is associated with high risks. Current export volumes do not guarantee sufficient load for the payback of such a project.
