Hyundai Mipo to Build LNG Bunkering Vessel for Asian Owner

South Korean shipbuilder Hyundai Mipo Dockyard has secured an order for one 18,000 cbm liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering ship. The vessel will be built for an unnamed owner from Asia, according to Hyundai Mipo’s stock exchange filing released on November 19, 2019. As informed, the contract is worth KRW 71.5 billion (USD 61.3 million) and includes one option. The newbuild is scheduled to be delivered to its owner by late January 2022. With a length of 166 meters and a width of 24.4 meters, the ship will feature a dual-fuel engine minimizing energy consumption. In 2016, Hyundai Mipo was awarded a contract for the construction of a 7,500 cbm LNG bunkering vessel by Germany’s Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement. The barge was handed over to the German company last year. Ahead of the entry into force of the IMO 2020 sulfur cap, the number of vessels using eco-friendly LNG as the main fuel is increasing, spurring new demand for LNG bunkering vessels.
